Spray defects are not random. In most body shop situations, orange peel, dry spray, mottling, striping, and uneven metallic layout come from a small group of causes: incorrect gun setup, unstable air supply, wrong material reduction, poor flash control, or inconsistent hand movement. The professional painter’s job is to read the defect correctly before making adjustments. Guessing usually creates a second problem on top of the first.
Orange peel appears when the coating does not flow out to the required texture. The surface may be too dry, too thick, or unable to level before solvent release. First, check spray distance. If the gun is too far from the panel, droplets lose solvent before landing. If the gun is too close with too much fluid, the film may build heavily and hold wave. Also check reducer speed, booth temperature, and flash time. In hot conditions, a reducer that flashes too quickly can lock texture into the clear coat.

When testing an air spray gun, spray a one-second fan pattern on masking paper and read the shape. A narrow dry fan may need fluid adjustment or better air volume. A split fan may need lower pressure or more material delivery. If one side of the fan is weak, clean the air cap carefully with the correct brush. Never use a steel pick that can damage the precision holes.
Metallic layout problems often come from inconsistent overlap, poor gun angle, or excessive wetness. Keep the gun parallel to the panel and avoid arcing at the wrist. On large doors and hoods, move your body across the panel to maintain distance. Use steady overlap and consistent speed so metallic particles settle evenly. If a control coat is required, apply it lightly after proper flash; do not use it to hide heavy, wet patches that should have been controlled earlier.
Color direction must also be checked before spraying the vehicle. Spray a test card with the same number of coats, same distance, and same final orientation method planned for the repair. Compare it under daylight and color-corrected shop lighting. A gun setting that looks acceptable on paper may still need adjustment when sprayed on a vertical panel with real booth airflow.
Fix one variable at a time. Change distance, pressure, fluid, overlap, or reducer speed separately so the result can be understood. If several adjustments are made at once, the painter will not know which correction solved the defect. Keep the spray gun clean, keep the air supply dry, and inspect the pattern before every critical clear coat or metallic basecoat operation.
