Metallic paint can become patchy in a side-spray transition when the painter changes speed, distance, angle, or fluid output too suddenly. The defect appears as dark clouds, light halos, tiger striping, or coarse metallic islands near the end of the repair. Before spraying, extend the prepared blend area farther than the visible damage so the transition can be built gradually rather than forced into a narrow strip.
Apply the ground coat over the repaired area until hiding is nearly complete. Keep the air cap perpendicular, maintain a stable gun distance, and use the coating maker’s recommended overlap. Do not begin blending while the repair center is still uneven because every corrective pass increases local film build.
Set the lvlp spray gun dynamically with the trigger fully open. Confirm a clean, symmetrical fan on masking paper. Begin with the fan fully developed and the fluid control at the proven production setting. Spray the repair center with normal travel speed, then allow the specified flash before judging color and metallic orientation.
For the first transition pass, extend beyond the repair by approximately one fan width. Keep gun speed constant and reduce material slightly by easing the trigger near the outer third of the stroke. Do not swing the wrist away from the panel; that changes droplet size and creates a dry crescent.
On the second transition pass, move another half to one fan width outward. Reduce fluid by one-eighth turn or use controlled partial-trigger movement, depending on the gun design. Maintain atomization pressure unless the pattern becomes visibly dry. A gradual reduction in deposited material is more reliable than abruptly increasing distance.
Use 65 to 75 percent overlap in the color area, then reduce effective overlap as the pass enters the blend zone. The fade should become lighter through distance traveled, not through random wrist motion. Keep the gun parallel to the panel and finish every stroke while still moving.
If the blend edge appears dark, it is often too wet. Increase travel speed slightly or reduce fluid output. If it looks pale and grainy, the droplets are drying before landing; shorten distance modestly or reduce pressure by 0.1 to 0.2 bar. An air spray gun may produce a different droplet spectrum, but the same wetness and orientation rules apply.
After the color has flashed, use the lvlp spray gun for an orientation pass with slightly lower fluid delivery and a modest increase in distance, provided the coating technical data permits it. Move smoothly across both the repair and transition so metallic flakes settle in a consistent plane.
Inspect the panel from multiple angles under color-corrected side lighting. Compare the blend while facing the panel, then from the front and rear sight lines. Metallic mismatch that disappears head-on may remain visible at an oblique angle.
If correction is required, apply one broad, light control pass rather than spot-fogging a small cloud. Spot-fogging concentrates dry overspray and usually enlarges the halo. Allow full flash, wipe only if the paint system permits, and clearcoat after the transition is uniform, dry, and free from loose metallic dust.
Record pressure, fluid position, nozzle size, reducer speed, distance, overlap, booth temperature, and the number of transition passes. Photograph the panel under the same light angle. These records help the shop reproduce the blend on adjacent panels and reduce repeated color adjustment.
