How to Tune Atomization Pressure on an LVLP Spray Gun

Pressure tuning is one of the most misunderstood steps in automotive refinishing. Many painters look only at static wall pressure, but the number that matters is pressure with the trigger fully pulled. When the trigger is open, the gun is consuming air, the hose is flowing, and the regulator shows the real working condition.

Before tuning, confirm that the compressor can supply the gun without pressure drop. Use the proper hose diameter, avoid long restrictive fittings, and keep quick couplers clean. A premium LVLP gun performs best when air delivery is stable. If pressure falls during a pass, the fan collapses and atomization becomes inconsistent.

Load properly mixed material into the cup. Strain the coating to remove debris. For basecoat, follow the paint manufacturer’s reduction ratio. For clearcoat, respect activator and reducer recommendations because viscosity affects atomization. A gun cannot correct badly mixed material.

Set the regulator slightly below the upper recommended range, then test on masking paper or a spray-out card. Pull the trigger fully for one second while holding the gun square to the surface. Look at the pattern. A good pattern is long, balanced, and wet enough to show proper material flow. Heavy center means too much fluid or insufficient air. Split pattern often means too much air, too little fluid, or fan control opened too aggressively.
