Short pauses are common during automotive refinishing: a painter may wait for a tack check, reposition a stand, inspect coverage, or allow a controlled flash. During that interval, solvent evaporates fastest at the fluid tip and air-cap horns. If residue begins to skin, the next pass can show a distorted fan, heavy center, dry horn, spitting, or particle contamination. The following procedure protects both a lvlp spray gun and an air spray gun without disrupting the coating schedule.
For a pause under two minutes, keep the gun in a clean holder, maintain the cup upright, and avoid placing the air cap near direct booth airflow. Do not leave the trigger partially pulled. A partially open needle can allow material to creep around the tip and form a ring.
For a pause of several minutes, wipe the fluid tip with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with the coating manufacturer’s approved cleaner. Do not flood the air cap while material remains in the cup, and never use an aggressive solvent that can migrate into the color and alter application properties.
Inspect the air-cap horns under good light. Dried material in one horn hole creates an asymmetrical fan and forces the painter to compensate with poor technique. Use the correct soft brush or non-metallic cleaning tool. Never push a steel wire, drill bit, or welding-tip cleaner through precision air passages; enlarging a hole permanently changes atomization.
If the product and gun design allow it, briefly spray into an approved waste container before returning to the panel. This confirms that the needle is moving freely and removes the small amount of material exposed at the tip. Observe the pattern on masking paper. A clean oval with balanced horns indicates that production can resume. Spitting, pulsation, or a heavy side requires cleaning before the gun approaches the vehicle.
When the wait extends beyond the normal working window, follow the paint manufacturer’s pot-life and gun-storage instructions. For catalyzed primer, sealer, clear, or single-stage urethane, material can continue reacting inside the fluid passages even when evaporation is controlled. Emptying and flushing the gun may be safer than trying to preserve mixed material.
For waterborne basecoat, use only compatible cleaners and maintain the specified booth air movement. Waterborne residue can form a film at the cap, but introducing conventional solvent may contaminate the system. Keep dedicated equipment and cleaning tools clearly separated.
Before restarting, inspect the cup vent, fluid tip, needle packing area, and cap face. Pull air first, then fluid, and spray a short test pattern. Compare fan width and material distribution with the pattern recorded at setup. Only resume on the vehicle when the pattern is stable.
