An unbalanced left-right spray fan pattern is a common shop-floor problem, and it must be corrected before spraying the vehicle. If one side of the fan is heavy and the other side is weak, the coating will build unevenly. On a clearcoat job, this may show as striping, orange peel variation, or dry edges. On basecoat, it can cause color inconsistency or metallic mottling. The fastest solution is not to compensate with hand movement; the correct method is to diagnose the gun.
Start with a test spray on masking paper. Hold the gun straight, spray a short burst, and observe the fan shape. A healthy pattern should be symmetrical, with even material distribution. Even a small scratch in the air cap can permanently affect atomization. Clean the fluid tip, needle seat, and cap face. For emergency on-site correction, follow this order: test pattern, clean air cap, clean fluid tip, check nozzle tightness, check needle movement, verify air pressure, confirm viscosity.
