Heavy polishing is usually a symptom of an unstable application process. Excessive orange peel, dirt entrapment, dry overspray, runs, edge texture, and uneven gloss often begin with poor spray-gun setup or inconsistent technique. By optimizing pressure, fluid delivery, fan shape, distance, speed, overlap, and booth conditions, a painter can make both a lvlp spray gun and an air spray gun produce a flatter, cleaner finish that needs less correction after cure.

1. Start with dynamic pressure

Set inlet pressure with the trigger fully pulled and airflow moving through the gun. Static gauge readings are misleading because hose length, fittings, and filter restriction create pressure drop. Use the coating manufacturer’s range as the starting point, then evaluate atomization on a test panel. Too little pressure can produce coarse droplets and heavy texture; too much can create dry overspray and unnecessary material bounce-back.

2. Balance fluid and travel speed

Open the fluid control until the gun delivers enough material for the coating to level within the intended pass speed. If fluid is too low, the painter slows down and may create uneven overlap. If fluid is too high, the surface becomes overloaded and develops runs or solvent retention. Choose a travel speed that can be maintained across the full panel without abrupt acceleration near edges.

3. Verify the complete fan

Spray a stationary pattern on masking paper for the period approved by the equipment procedure. The fan should be symmetrical, with no heavy side, split center, or weak horn. Then spray a moving pattern to judge actual atomization. A wide fan is not automatically better; it must carry balanced material from center to edge.

4. Control distance and overlap

Maintain the recommended gun-to-panel distance and keep the air cap parallel. Use consistent overlap, commonly around 70 percent for many refinishing operations, unless the technical data sheet requires another value. Uneven overlap creates alternating heavy and light bands that may become visible as texture or gloss variation after curing.

5. Match reducer and hardener to conditions

Gun settings cannot fully correct the wrong solvent speed. Select reducer and activator for booth temperature, panel size, airflow, and repair type. A product that flashes too quickly may leave dry texture; one that remains open too long may sag or trap solvent. Record temperature and humidity so the setup can be reproduced.

6. Reduce contamination before it lands

Drain the compressor and filters, inspect the hose, clean the gun exterior, wear a clean spray suit, and control booth entry. Adjust the gun outside the vehicle work zone so test spray does not settle on prepared panels. A cleaner application means fewer isolated nibs and less aggressive denibbing.

7. Build a measurable setup sheet

Record nozzle size, dynamic pressure, fan turns, fluid turns, distance, overlap, product mix, flash time, and booth conditions. After cure, note the amount of sanding and polishing required. Over several jobs, the relationship between setup and correction time becomes clear.

The target is not a finish that never receives any polishing. The target is a controlled film with minimal texture correction, limited denibbing, and no avoidable runs or dry edges. When parameters and technique are stable, polishing becomes a finishing step instead of a repair operation.
